A Jam Session To Remember

From the time I left home at 16 until my early 30's I played electric bass on the road with various recording artists some better known than others. Most of them hadn't had a hit in at least five years but the dough was still pretty good and they all paid in cash.
After I "retired" I kept my chops up but gigs for someone my age are few and far between. So when my son called a couple of weeks ago and told me about a drummer and guitar player looking for a bass player to jam with, I jumped at the chance.
After I introduced myself to Pete the guitar player and Eddy the drummer I set up my gear while Pete fired up a bone and Eddy uncorked a bottle of wine. They graciously offered to share their refreshments with me but I declined there's just no way I'm ever going through all that DUI nonsense.
As it turned out we had quite a few tunes in common and didn't have to rely on the blues in E for 3 hours. And even better yet, Pete the guitar player had a versatile voice and could sing everything from "Ramble On" to Gladys Knight's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine."
Well, two bones and two more bottles later things began to fall apart a little bit. Pete was still holding his own, but Eddy was showing signs of wear and started slowing down in the middle of tunes like one of those wind up drumming monkeys.
But just when you thought he was ready to pass out he would sit bolt upright like he'd been doused with a bucket of cold water and start flailing away again like Keith Moon on steroids. Finally, he slowed down for the last time, dropped his sticks, and slumped back against the wall.
"That's it" said Pete, without a hint of surprise. "But he must've really liked your playing because he never lasted this long before."
